We are excited to share our very first Vietnamese Coffea Liberica with you! It's unlike anything else in our lineup, and truly a one-of-a-kind coffee worth experiencing for yourself. We were drawn to this coffee because of the incredible story behind it, and we are eager to now share it with you.
Expect a flavour reminiscent of whiskey as well as notes of jackfruit and stevia. This coffee is for the adventurous coffee drinker who wants to surprise their palate.
About this Coffea Liberica
This anaerobic natural process Liberica is sourced by 96B from Huong Hoa, a remote district of Quang Tri, Vietnam, and comes from old French-era Liberica cultivars that thrived in the region's warm, humid climate (24 to 26ºC) despite lower elevations of around 600 m.a.s.l. In Huong Hoa, Liberica is often planted alongside Arabica as a windbreak rather than grown as the primary crop, a departure from its more typical role in Vietnam's Robusta-heavy growing regions.
About 96B
96B was founded in 2016 by Hana C., an SCAE-certified roaster, brewer, and barista, starting as a small experiment that grew into a well-known cafe and roastery. That same year, 96B began working with Liberica, experimenting with a wide range of processing methods from washed, honey, and natural to more experimental approaches like lactic fermentation and champagne yeast inoculation. Thai Dang joined in 2020, bringing a focus on efficiency and leading a full rebrand to 96B Cafe & Roastery. Since then, 96B has expanded into exporting and is recognized for its work with rare coffee varieties and species, particularly Coffea Liberica, along with its focus on innovation and education.
Their partnerships span Vietnam, working directly with farmers on Arabica, fine indigenous Robusta, and Liberica, including projects to reintroduce historic Liberica cultivars and develop distinct regional profiles. In 2023, this work took focused shape in the Liberica Project, started with a group of like-minded, innovative farmers to build the region's reputation for quality.
