Pour Over Coffee | What is it? How can I start?

A pour over coffee is a great way to make a delicious and fresh cup of coffee. One of the great things about using this method to brew coffee is that you can make it your own. There is no right or wrong way to make a pour over. While guides, recipe cards and the pros can share with you ways in how they make the best tasting coffee for themselves, you have your own palate and are free to develop your own way to consume your morning cup of joe.

What is a pour over coffee?
A pour over coffee is made by “pouring over” hot water onto a bed of coffee grounds.

What is special about a pour over coffee?
What makes this process so special is the ability to control variables to produce your perfect brew. This means control over technique, grind size, water temperature, water added, as well as the speed and rate the water is added to the coffee grounds. These are things you likely do not get with your average coffee maker. All of these things affect your end product.

Plus, in being in control of these variables, there is the personal enjoyment that comes with actually handcrafting your own cup of coffee. There is a type of relationship and ritual that emerges. It may all sound a bit sentimental, but if you enjoy the satisfaction that comes with enjoying something you had a hand in making, then pour overs are a daily ritual you will enjoy!

Try this: approach brewing coffee like you would cooking or baking. Follow a recipe and its measurements, and you might surprise yourself with how tasty and enjoyable the whole process can be.
